This page is dedicated to the memory of the late David E Cooke who passed away on 9 October 2003. David was dedicated to the preservation of the State's railway heritage and was a keen enthusiast and authority on self-propelled rolling stock.

  • The definitive work on NSW Rail Motors is "Rail Motors and XPTs" by David E. Cooke, published by the Australian Railway Historical Society in 1984. This work is the basis of much of the information contained in this web site and the assistance and cooperation of the late David Cooke is greatly acknowledged in the preparation of this site. Unfortunately this publication is now out of print.
  • "Rail Motors in NSW" is a reprint (by the Rail Motor Society Inc. 2003) of a paper presented to the Institution of Engineers in 1928 by Rupert A Holloway, a senior engineer with the NSW Railways. It details many interesting facts and figures about the construction and early years of the operations of CPH Rail Motors. This book is now available from the Rail Motor Society.
  • An excellent account of the Xplorer and Endeavour rail cars is given in the article "ABB Xplorer/Endeavour Rail Cars" by John Hoyle, published in the NSW Railway Digest - June 1995.
  • A comprehensive account of the of the 900 Class DEB sets is given in the two-part article "The 900 Class DEB Sets of NSWGR" by Peter Neve, published in Australian Railway History - October and November 2012.
  • The Silver City Comet is profiled in detail in an article by Ian Dunn in "Australian Diesel Scene 2", published by Eveleigh Press in 1994.
  • The 400 and 500 Class are profiled in detail in an article by Ron Preston in "Australian Diesel Scene 4", published by Eveleigh Press in 2000.
  • HPC 402 Radio Test Car is profiled in an article by Graham Ball in "Australian Diesel Scene 4", published by Eveleigh Press in 2000.
