Volunteer

At The Rail Motor Society, our volunteers are the heart and soul of everything we do. Every single person here gives their time freely because they share a passion for preserving our rich railway history. Since 1984, our dedicated volunteers have been the driving force behind the Society’s success, and we’re always excited to welcome new members to our team.Whether you’re looking to lend a hand, learn new skills, or simply be part of a friendly community, there’s a place for you here. Our main workdays are Mondays and Wednesdays when volunteers come together to maintain our historic rolling stock, infrastructure, and beautiful grounds. Every second Wednesday, we host a barbecue lunch (for a small fee), where volunteers can relax, enjoy good food, and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Everyone is welcome, and we’d love for you to join in, whether you’re a man or woman, young or young at heart!

What we offer

  • Hands-on Experience: Get involved in maintaining and restoring historic rail motors. If you’re a maintenance fitter, diesel mechanic, carpenter, electrician, plumber, or painter, there are plenty of opportunities to apply your skills!
  • Unique Roles: Assist with track maintenance, grounds upkeep, and rolling stock preparation, or help with administration if you prefer working behind the scenes.
  • Train Operations: Want to be on the move? Become a car attendant and take part in our train operations. Volunteers are welcome to stay overnight at Paterson in our on-site amenities’ carriages.
  • Specialised Roles: Interested in becoming a Driver or Driver Assistant? With the right qualifications, you can play an integral role in our mainline operations.
  • We proudly support Centrelink’s Voluntary Work Initiative for those over 55, so if you’re looking to contribute your time and skills, you’re more than welcome to join our vibrant team.
